Wonderful Games

We now had seven players in the house. Having recently acquired 7 Wonders, a card drafting game about building up your city and its wonder, this seemed a great opportunity to try it with seven players. Again, only Sarah and I had played this before so there was some explaining of rules. This produced some very puzzled looks on the others’ faces (I always seem to have trouble getting the concepts of this game across). Fortunately, the game is played in rounds, or ‘Ages’, and the cards get progressively more complex so new players are eased into the game.
The game got underway. I always find this game interesting as you are predominantly keeping an eye on what your neighbours are doing as they most directly affect you. It was interesting to see players taking different routes to scoring. There were the players with huge armies, and others concentrating on science. I seemed to just be going for the blue victory point cards and building up my wonder, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. As usual I didn’t do so well, coming fifth. I love this game but never seem to do well at it! 😕
And funnily enough, the player who seemed most confused about the rules was the player who won! With this being the first competitive game of the day I took the opportunity to award the player with a certificate, à la TableTop.

Hunting Shadows and Losing Our Marbles

During the final age of 7 Wonders another four players had arrived. We decided this was the time to split into two groups of players. Sarah took a group off into another room.
I showed my group the game Shadow Hunters, which is a team game where no-one knows who is on their team at the start of the game. There are Shadows, evil demons out to conquer the world; Hunters who are trying to destroy the Shadow; and neutral players who have their own agenda. During the game, cards can be used that will give a player a little information about another player, and so each player gradually figures out who their opponents and teammates are. It’s a simple enough game and is ideally suited to this kind of day. We had five players for this game and discovered that a husband-and-wife pair had no qualms about attacking each other in the game! 😀 The neutral player won as his character needed the Shadows to be dead and him to still be alive – he was quite happy to sit back and watch the Shadows and Hunters war be waged! He was the proud recipient of a TableTop-esque certificate.

Meanwhile, next door they had already played a quicker game and had started a new one. My group decided to play another game so I got out Bazaar thinking this would be a quick game and should finish near the time the other group finished.
Bazaar is a game about trading marbles. There are five colours of marbles that a player can get. They need to collect them to buy cards that are worth points. The catch is that when a player buys a card they score more points for having less marbles in their collection.
So five of us sat round the table staring at our collection of marbles and pondering the possibilities present on various cards on the table. The amount of concentration was palpable and the room deathly silent. Our intense calculations were occasionally interrupted by cries of “You’re the saboteur!” from the next room, who were obviously playing Saboteur at this point.
Despite me thinking this would be a quick game, Bazaar lasted for about 40 minutes, during which the other group got through a game of Cloud 9. The winner was a lass who works in finance – figures! 😉

We took this opportunity to have a short break so people could swap groups and mix things up a bit. This gave our guests the chance to chat and get to know each other a bit better. It also gave us Bazaar players a chance to proverbally massage our poor aching minds!
